Abstract

The aim of the present research was to describe the characteristics of the cognitive skills in emotional intelligent in regard to a positive emotion (happiness), in a sample of 30 children from 4º to 6º grades, through a semistructured interview created ad hoc. It was observed that children could identify the emotion in the own person (perception) although with difficulties in the area of cognitive identification; they considered the redirection and prioritization of the thoughts in the positive states (facilitation); they could identify the causes of the emotional state (understanding) associating them with familiar interaction; and they showed increased use of active and social strategies for the situation (management). An analysis of these characteristics is tried according to the studied rural context. This research tended to contribute with empirical information to the knowledge of emotional intelligence and positive emotions in children. That might be useful in the creation of mental health promotion programs for the encouragement of positive and healthy development during childhood.
