Abstract

The present article analyses the hazards at a psychiatric ward that treatment of imprisoned psychotic patients entails. The method used to analyze the data was developed by R.D. Hnshelwood and W. Skogstad (2000) for observing organizations. An analysis was performed through a systematic observation of the psychiatric ward. The staff dealt with the contradictory duality implied in attempting to rehabilitate and confine a group of people simultaneously. The analysis emphasized a description of the unconscious defensive strategies employed by the members of the organization in order to deal with the intensity of the group dynamics.
