Abstract

The objective of this article is to present an introduction to the main principles of Evolutionary Psychology and its contributions for the understanding of the human condition. The discipline's main concepts are revised, emphasizing the conception of the mind as an adaptation, which has been modeled by natural and sexual selection. Survival mechanisms such as emotions are illustrated, and the role of sexual selections on the differentiation of men and women is explained. The discussion aims at recognizing the integrative value of the evolutionary perspective, leaving behind the old nature-nurture debate, which promotes research and transcends the frontiers of the classical conception of the discipline.
